Not all wildfire hardening spends the same. Research from IBHS, NIST, and CAL FIRE shows the cheapest measures, ember-resistant vents, a cleared first 5 feet, clean roof edges, and a fence break, block the ember pathways that ignite most homes, while the most expensive projects often add the least new protection. Here is every common measure, ranked by effectiveness, with real cost ranges and the evidence behind each.

The four low-cost items at the top of the table together typically cost less than $6,000 and address the ember entry paths implicated in 80 to 90 percent of home ignitions. The three most expensive projects cost $40,000 to $100,000 combined and mostly strengthen protection many homes already have.
