Baffle vents

A baffle vent replaces your old vent with one built to make embers take a winding path. Most of them lose energy and drop out before they reach the attic.

How it works

What happens when embers hit it.

  1. 01

Inside the vent, overlapping metal baffles block a straight line through. Air can bend around them. Embers, which are heavier, mostly can't.

  2. 02

A fine stainless mesh behind the baffles catches what's left. Some models add a strip that swells shut in high heat.

  3. 03

In 2025, NIST tested vents at very high heat. Baffle designs held up better than honeycomb designs, though no vent was perfect once the eave itself caught fire.

Why people choose it

  • No moving parts or coatings to wear out
  • Comes in sizes for almost every vent location
  • Held up best of the designs NIST tested at high heat in 2025

What to watch for

  • A full vent replacement, so it costs more than mesh
  • Less open area than plain mesh, so some homes need an extra vent to keep code ventilation
  • Confirm the exact model on the State Fire Marshal's listing
