Honeycomb vents

Honeycomb vents look like a grid of small cells. Each cell is coated with a material that swells when it gets hot, closing the vent before flames and embers get through.

How it works

What happens when embers hit it.

  1. 01

In normal weather, air moves freely through the honeycomb cells and a stainless mesh behind them.

  2. 02

When heat hits the vent, the intumescent coating expands and seals the cells shut.

  3. 03

In NIST's 2025 high-heat tests, honeycomb designs let more flame through than baffle designs once exposure got extreme. No vent design was perfect at that level.

Why people choose it

  • Seals itself shut in direct heat
  • Retrofit kits fit many existing openings
  • Wide range of sizes, including round eave vents

What to watch for

  • Did less well than baffle designs in NIST's most extreme 2025 tests
  • A full vent replacement, so it costs more than mesh
  • Confirm the exact model on the State Fire Marshal's listing
